Hypothyroidism and what to do about it?

What happens when your thyroid is no longer working to it's optimal capacity?

The most prevalent thyroid disorder on the planet these days is an under-active thyroid – aka ‘hypothyroidism’. It is estimated that about 4-5% of the population in the developed world are affected by hypothyroidism and levels of subclinical hypothyroidism are about 4-15%. It is also seven times more common in women than men.

Common symptoms of hypothyroidism include:

  • Fatigue

  • Sensitivity to cold

  • Weight gain or inability to lose weight

  • Constipation

  • Puffy face

  • Stiff, swollen or achy joints

  • Puffy face

  • Irregular or heavy periods

If you recognise any of them please contact your physician for further diagnosis. They will need to run a set of tests to confirm your suspicions.

It is not easy to diagnose hypothyroidism as most of the symptoms can be attributed to something else, but once you find a trusted physician or a complementary therapist you can hit the nail on the head by looking after your thyroid. It is important that you find the root cause of the problem and not put a plaster on it.
